What are the steps to integrate with Otter?

1. Open an Otter account for the location

One Otter organization per restaurant, with a store for each location. Otter sells this directly, or it comes as part of a platform that includes it.
2. Connect each delivery app

Sign in to your DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub merchant accounts from inside Otter. Only the account holder can do this, so have the logins ready.
3. Match the menu

Each item and each modifier on each app has to match an item Otter knows. This is the slow step. An unmatched item is the usual reason an order fails to reach the register.
4. Connect the POS

Link the register so tickets post as orders and nobody retypes them. Check that your POS is on Otter's list first.
5. Place a test order on every channel

Order one item from each app and from your own site. Confirm it shows on the tablet, prints or bumps in the kitchen, and lands in the POS with the right price and tax.

What is Otter, and what does integrating with it do?

Otter is order-aggregation software that runs on a kitchen tablet. Instead of one tablet per delivery app, each connected channel drops its orders into one feed. Otter can also send those orders into the POS (point of sale, your register) and push menu changes back out to the apps.

It does not change what a marketplace charges. A DoorDash order on the Otter tablet still pays DoorDash its commission.

Three things. A modifier that exists on the app menu but not in the POS, so the order is rejected. A store paired to the wrong location in a multi-location group. And an item marked sold out on one channel but still on sale on another.

How long does it take to integrate with Otter?

It depends on the size of the menu and the number of apps. Signing in to the delivery apps is quick. Matching every item and modifier across every channel is the part that takes time, and it should end with a test order on each channel.

Do I need Otter to take online orders?

No. Otter gathers orders from several channels onto one tablet. A restaurant with one ordering channel does not need it. It earns its place when you run two or more delivery apps plus your own ordering site.

Does integrating with Otter lower delivery app commission?

No. Otter changes where the order appears, not what the app charges. Marketplaces charge a 15% to 30% base commission. The only way to pay less is to move orders to your own site.

Can Otter send orders into my POS?

Otter lists the registers it connects to at https://www.tryotter.com/integrations. Check that list for your POS. On Zayos, direct orders inject through Otter into Clover, Square or Shift4 at no extra cost, and into Toast with Toast's own $50 a month fee.
