◆ Clover POS

Zayos and Clover.

Quick answer

Zayos connects to Clover through Otter, so direct orders print and post like in store tickets. Your Clover hardware, merchant agreement and processing rate do not change. The one thing to check first is whether the reseller who sold you Clover allows integration apps on your account.

Why is Clover the one that needs a phone call?

Almost nobody buys Clover from Clover. It arrives with a merchant account, sold by a bank, a payment processor or an independent sales office, usually bundled with the hardware sitting on your counter. That relationship, not the software, is what decides how much room your account has.

The practical consequence: two restaurants can run identical Clover Stations and get different answers about what they are allowed to connect, because a different company manages each account. Owners find this out at the worst possible moment, in launch week, when somebody discovers the account cannot install what the plan assumed.

Fifteen minutes on the phone before you sign anything removes that risk entirely. Here is what to ask.

What should I ask my Clover rep before I sign?

Five questions. Ask them in this order, write the answers down, and you will never be surprised by your own point of sale again.

01

Who is my Clover account actually with?

Clover is distributed through banks, payment processors and independent sales offices. The name on your statement is the party that controls your plan, your rate and in some cases what your account is allowed to install. Knowing that name is step one of every other answer on this page.

02

Which Clover software plan am I on?

Clover sells tiered software plans, and the tier decides which capabilities and third party apps your account can reach. Owners are routinely on a plan somebody chose for them at install and have never looked at it since. Ask for the plan name in writing.

03

Can my account install third party integration apps, and if not, who can change that?

Some resellers keep app installation restricted on the accounts they manage. That is a business decision on their side, not a Clover limitation, and it is the single most common reason a Clover integration stalls. If the answer is no, ask who at the reseller can approve an exception.

04

What is my current effective processing rate, all in?

Not the headline rate, the effective one: total fees divided by total card volume for last month. You want this number before you talk to anybody about online ordering, because it is the baseline that makes every other quote comparable.

05

Am I in a term commitment, and when does it end?

Clover deals are often bundled with hardware financing and a term. Zayos does not need you to leave that deal, and you should not sign anything that assumes you will. Knowing the end date just means nobody sells you a story that depends on breaking it.

How does a Zayos order reach a Clover kitchen?

Step 1

The diner orders on your Zayos site

Your own domain, your own photos, your own prices. Payment is captured by Stripe at checkout, so the order arrives paid.

Step 2

The ticket hits the kitchen tablet

Same feed and same alert as your DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub tickets. This is the part the line cares about, and it does not change when your point of sale changes.

Step 3

The order posts into Clover

Items, modifiers, notes and order type land as a ticket, so the counter is not retyping an order that has already been paid for.

Step 4

The 86 list travels back out

Kill an item once, and it goes unavailable on your site and on the apps, instead of staying orderable until a customer complains.

Does it matter which Clover device I have?

Less than people expect. The account and the plan decide what can connect. The device mostly decides how you take a card in the room. One exception is worth flagging, and it is the last one on this list.

  • Clover Station

The full counter setup. The most common configuration in a restaurant with a service counter, and the least fussy to integrate.

  • Clover Mini

Countertop, smaller footprint. Same account level questions apply, the device is not what decides the answer.

  • Clover Flex

Handheld. Popular for table side and for curbside handoff. Online orders still arrive as tickets, they are not tied to the handheld.

  • Clover Go or a phone reader

Card acceptance without a restaurant point of sale behind it. If this is your whole setup, tell us at intake: the Zayos kitchen tablet can run on its own, and you may not need a point of sale connection at all.

What does the Zayos Clover integration not do?

Zayos does not change your Clover merchant agreement, processing rate or reseller relationship, it does not install on Clover hardware or replace the Clover device on your counter, it cannot override a reseller that has locked third party apps on your account, and it does not migrate Clover Rewards balances or Clover customer records.

Two more, said plainly. Clover models modifiers differently from the delivery marketplaces, so a build your own item with many choices needs its mapping tested with real orders during onboarding rather than assumed. And where a reseller will not open the account, you are not stuck: the Zayos kitchen tablet runs standalone, you go live on direct ordering, and the point of sale connection waits until the account question is settled.

Clover questions, answered straight

Does connecting Zayos change my Clover rate or my merchant agreement?
No. Your Clover hardware, merchant account, processing rate and statement stay exactly as they are, with whoever sold you Clover. Zayos adds a direct ordering site whose checkout runs through Stripe. Nothing about how you take a card at the counter changes.
My Clover came from my bank. Is that a problem?
Usually not, but it is worth ten minutes on the phone before you sign. Because Clover is sold through banks, processors and resellers, what your particular account can install can depend on your plan and on the reseller managing it. Ask the five questions on this page first. If your reseller has locked third party installs, that is their policy and we cannot override it, so you want to know now rather than in launch week.
How do Zayos orders appear on Clover?
As a paid ticket with items, modifiers, special instructions and order type, so the counter does not ring it again. The kitchen tablet is still the screen the line works from, because that is where direct, DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub tickets all appear together.
What does the Clover integration cost?
Nothing on top of your plan. The point of sale connection is included and there is no setup fee. Plans are Operator at 499 dollars, Operator plus Marketplace at 599 dollars, and Concierge at 699 dollars, per location per month, month to month. Pulling DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub onto the same tablet starts at the Operator plus Marketplace tier.
What does a diner pay, and what do I pay per order?
The diner pays a flat service fee at checkout: 99 cents on pickup, 2 dollars 99 on delivery, nothing on dine in, 10 percent on catering. You pay nothing per order and keep 100 percent of food revenue and 100 percent of tips. A marketplace, by comparison, takes 15 to 30 percent base and 25 to 35 percent blended once delivery, marketing and processing fees stack.
What if my Clover is old, or nobody knows the login?
More common than you would think, and not a dead end. The Zayos kitchen tablet runs on its own, so you can go live on direct ordering while the Clover access gets sorted out, and connect the point of sale afterwards. Nobody has to delay a launch over a password.
